Hidden Light

Exhibition Curation, Editorial Book Design, Bookbinding

This conceptual art exhibition book explores the Hebrew concept of the “Hidden Light” and how contemporary artists interpret light as a spiritual, physical, and transcendent force. To curate the book, I combined texts from Barbara A. Weightman’s Sacred Landscapes and the Phenomenon of Light with artworks by James Turrell, Serge Najjar, Edward Hopper, Aire Calderon, Mary Corse, Mary Weatherford, Cerith Wyn Evans, and Doug Wheeler. Through a carefully considered visual language, the book invites readers to experience light as both a symbolic and sensory phenomenon.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Drawn from Kabbalistic teachings, this exhibition speaks to an inner light that remains ever-present yet unseen, a divine essence embedded within the world, waiting to be perceived.

EXHIBITION IDENTITY

The typography is bold, extended, and fully justified, forming large blocks of text. The verticality and weight of the type is working in contrast to the negative space creating beams of light. This interplay of dark and light creates an immersive sensation.

INSPIRATION

Hidden Light is inspired by the structure and rhythm of the Torah, where sacred text is placed in carefully measured columns. This influence guided the book’s grid and layout while still remaining approachable and easy to read.

“I have an interest in the invisible light, the light perceptible only in the mind. A light which seems to be undimmed by the entering of the senses. I want to address the light we see in dreams and make spaces that seem to come from those dreams and which are familiar to those who inhabit those places.”

- JAMES TURRELL

PROCESS

For the final production of Hidden Light, I printed the first and last chapters on fluorescent yellow paper, creating a striking visual bookend. I embossed the title across both covers, adding a tactile quality that engages the reader. Every design choice reinforces the exploration of light as symbolic and sensory.

BOOK BINDING

After a few test templates to practice and refine my technique, I assembled the final book using saddle-stitched binding for its clean, minimal structure and evenly sewn lines. I chose to use metallic silver thread to echo the reflective qualities of light and add a subtle visual accent.
